Smith — Range Overview

Smith Optics, founded in 1965 in Portland, Oregon, is now part of the Safilo Group. Its ChromaPop™ lens technology filters the crossover wavelength where green and blue light overlap, reducing colour confusion for more natural colour rendition and enhanced definition. Smith also offers BirdsEye Vision™ — a spherical downward extension that increases the field of view by ~25% — on the 4D Mag and Preview models.

The value-for-money verdict

The tables above are deliberately neutral. This section is our reading of them — and it is only fair to state once more that it is published by DAMO.

Smith plays fair on lenses: every MAG model includes two ChromaPop lenses, just like DAMO. The difference shows up in the cost per lens: ~€40–€50 at DAMO versus ~$126–$132 (Squad Mag), ~$141 (I/O Mag) and ~$174–$189 (4D Mag) at Smith — a two-to-four-times gap for what is, on paper, a comparable dual-layer construction and magnetic swap system. For the price of one 4D Mag, you can outfit three to four skiers in DAMO.

Optically, ChromaPop is genuine contrast engineering, proven over years — filtering the blue-green crossover delivers a colour rendition many skiers love. DAMO answers with a base tint plus a multi-layer interference mirror, with equivalent UV400 protection (0.00% measured UV on the DAMO side). No independent test separates the two approaches; the fundamentals — dual layer, permanent anti-fog, UV400 — sit at the same level.

Where Smith keeps a real edge: the limited lifetime warranty (DAMO’s warranty policy is not published), the BirdsEye Vision™ field of view with no DAMO equivalent, and a deep range with multiple sizes. If those matter most, the premium is defensible. But if the question is optical quality per euro — two lenses included, dual-layer construction, magnetic swap — DAMO comes out clearly ahead. That is the bet this brand was founded on.

FAQ

**1. What's the difference between ChromaPop and DAMO lenses?** ChromaPop™ filters the blue-green overlap wavelength to reduce colour confusion for natural colour rendering. DAMO uses a base tint (pink, blue, or gold) combined with a multi-layer interference mirror coating (SiO₂/Ti₃O₅) that selectively reflects certain wavelengths. Both approaches improve contrast through different optical routes. No comparative testing is available.

**2. Are DAMO lenses compatible with Smith frames?** No. Each brand uses its own frame and lens system. Lenses are not interchangeable.

**3. Why does Smith include two lenses on MAG models?** Smith supplies two ChromaPop lenses on all its magnetic-swap MAG models — one for bright conditions and one for low light. This is common practice in the premium segment. DAMO does the same from launch, including on its entry-level model.

**4. What is BirdsEye Vision™?** A spherical downward lens extension that increases vertical field of view by approximately 25% compared to standard spherical lenses. Available on Smith 4D Mag and Preview. DAMO does not offer an equivalent at this stage.

**5. Is the value proposition comparable?** We do not make value judgments. Price points: DAMO €80–€100 for 2 lenses, Smith Squad Mag $253–$265 (2 ChromaPop), Smith I/O Mag $283 (2 ChromaPop), and Smith 4D Mag $348–$378 (2 ChromaPop + BirdsEye). Markets and currencies differ (EUR vs USD).
