How to Clean and Care for Ski Goggle Lenses — Complete Guide

How to Clean and Care for Ski Goggle Lenses — Complete Guide

Learn how to clean and care for your DAMO goggle lenses without scratching them. Microfiber care, washing, storage — everything you need to protect your investment.

“**The bottom line:** Your DAMO goggle lenses carry a mirror coating, an anti-scratch hard coat, and a sealed anti-fog treatment inside a dual-lens construction. The wrong care routine — paper towels, alcohol, dry wiping — can ruin them permanently. Here's how to keep them performing season after season.”

— The bottom line:

The Golden Rule: Never Wipe a Wet Lens

This is mistake number one. You get off the chairlift, lenses fogged or dusted with melting snow, and your instinct is to wipe them. **Don't.** While the surface is wet, every particle of dust, grit, or tree resin acts like sandpaper under your cloth. Each pass grinds into the mirror coating and the anti-scratch layer.

**The fix:** Gently dab with the supplied microfiber bag to absorb moisture — don't rub. Let the lens air-dry before any deeper cleaning.

What You Can Use

The Microfiber Bag (Your Best Friend)

Your DAMO goggles come with a microfiber bag. It doubles as a storage pouch and a cleaning cloth. But a dirty cloth scratches as badly as bare grit. **Wash it regularly** — hand or machine wash with mild soap, no fabric softener, air dry. A grease- and dust-caked cloth is worse than no cloth at all.

Clean Water or a Purpose-Safe Soap

For a proper clean: rinse the lens under lukewarm running water first to float off loose particles. If needed, a drop of mild dish soap (no moisturisers or additives) works fine. Rinse thoroughly. Absorb water with the clean microfiber cloth using gentle dabbing motions.

**Warning:** Never use glass cleaner, alcohol, acetone, petrol, ammonia, or any household chemical. These attack the mirror coating, the hard coat, and the anti-fog layer.

What to Never Do

❌ No Paper Towels, Tissues, or Clothing

Paper products contain hard cellulose fibres that scratch both the lens and the mirror coating. Your cotton T-shirt? It's loaded with detergent residue, fabric softener, and microscopic grit. Even optical lens wipes designed for prescription glasses aren't recommended — they're not formulated for coated ski goggle lenses.

❌ No Alcohol or Household Cleaners

Isopropyl alcohol dissolves the hydrophilic anti-fog coating. Glass cleaners containing ammonia permanently etch the mirror layer. Disinfectant wipes are even worse.

❌ Never Leave Goggles on the Car Dashboard

Temperatures behind a windscreen can exceed 60 °C in parked sun. That kind of heat weakens the seal between the two lens layers and degrades the protected anti-fog treatment. If the seal is compromised, fog resistance drops permanently.

❌ Never Touch the Inner Lens Surface

The inner lens carries the anti-fog coating — a silicone-based hydrophilic layer that makes condensation spread as a transparent sheet rather than light-scattering droplets. This coating is **sealed inside the dual-lens construction**: it's not accessible, can't be cleaned, and should never be touched. The oils from your fingers destroy it instantly.

The Inner Lens: A Special Case

DAMO goggles use a **dual-lens construction**: an outer polycarbonate (PC) lens and an inner cellulose acetate (CA) lens, separated by a sealed air gap. The anti-fog coating is applied to the inner surface of the inner CA lens — the face exposed to the air gap. This means:

  • It's **protected** from mechanical wear and cleaning
  • It **cannot be cleaned** or rejuvenated
  • If the seal is damaged (impact, extreme heat, age), fog resistance degrades **permanently**
  • **Never attempt to separate the two lens layers** — this is irreversible

The silver lining: because the anti-fog treatment is shielded from the outside world and from cleaning, this construction is inherently more durable than single-lens systems where the coating sits exposed.

How to Store Your Goggles

Storage matters as much as cleaning.

  1. **Always use the microfiber bag** to protect lenses from dust and scratches inside your pack
  2. **Store in the rigid EVA case** supplied with every goggle — it's crush-resistant and the best protection against impact
  3. **Keep away from heat sources** — radiator, dashboard, hair dryer, oven. High temperatures weaken coatings and seals
  4. **Avoid prolonged direct sunlight** — UV accelerates polymer and coating aging
  5. **Never place goggles lens-down on a surface** — always use the bag as a protective mat

Cleaning Frequency

  • **After every ski day:** dab residual moisture with the microfiber cloth
  • **Every 3–4 ski days:** rinse with clean water and wash the microfiber cloth
  • **End of season:** full clean, air dry, store in the rigid case with the freshly washed cloth

FAQ

Can I use a wet wipe to clean my lenses?

No. Wet wipes contain cleaning agents, alcohol, or fragrances that attack surface treatments. Use only clean water and the microfiber cloth.

My lenses are scratched — can I polish them out?

No. Polishing removes the mirror coating and anti-scratch layer. Scratches in polycarbonate cannot be repaired — the lens must be replaced.

The anti-fog performance is fading — what can I do?

If fog resistance is declining, it may indicate a compromised dual-lens seal. The lens needs to be replaced. There is no effective rejuvenation product for sealed anti-fog treatments.

Can I put my goggles in the dishwasher?

No. The heat, detergents, and water pressure destroy all coatings and the seal.

How long do DAMO lenses last?

With careful maintenance, the mirror and anti-scratch coatings last several seasons. Anti-fog performance depends on seal integrity — a well-cared-for goggle can deliver 2 to 3 seasons before fog resistance starts to fade.
